Some Interesting Facts About the Largest Crocodile
According to Guinness, the largest crocodile lives on the Orissa coast of India, and measures about twenty-three feet long. It is housed at the Bhitarkanika Park, and it is a saltwater crocodile.
The chief warden for wildlife in Orissa, S.C. Mohanty, confirms that the park's creeks are the home for more than one of the world's longest saltwater crocodiles.
The most recent census at the Bhitarkanika sanctuary has indicated that the total number of crocodiles in the park is 1462, of which 203 are adults.
Crocodile experts along with the senior officer of research in the Sudhakar Kar wildlife division have reported that about eight other saltwater crocodiles in the Bhitarkanika park have reached the length of sixteen to eighteen feet. Five crocodiles reportedly have attained a length of eighteen to twenty feet, and three specimens of the largest crocodile are over twenty feet in length.
Bhitarkanika park has been discovered to have the ideal habitat for saltwater crocodiles in India. They also have the largest concentration of saltwater crocodiles in the nation. There are other parks that have suitable habitats for saltwater crocodiles, including Nicobar Islands, Andaman and Sundarbans, but these parks have relatively small crocodile populations.
Dr. Kar reported that the Dangmal Interpretation Center, within the Bhitarkanika park, has preserved a skeleton of a dead crocodile that measures nineteen feet, 8 inches. This would make it very close to the world's largest crocodile.
Wildlife experts from other areas have argued that the largest crocodile found in Bhitarkanika was nearly twenty-five feet long. This is only an estimate, however, based on the skull that was measured.
The Bombay Natural History Society has gone to the Kanika Royal Family to request that they give that crocodile head to the society to be preserved, but the Royal Family has refused to part with it.
Experts in wildlife conservation said that, in addition to having the largest crocodile living, the Bhitarkanika park also is the home for the endangered and rare white crocodiles, of which only ten have been found in the wild. In addition, the Dangmal Center has a rare white croc named “Gori” who has lived in captivity for over twenty years.
What is the largest crocodile species? That would be the Crocodylus poroses, at least in the minds of most wildlife experts who have weighed in on the question. In fact, this is thought to be the largest reptile on earth, although many snake experts have come back with information that has some snakes who are longer than the largest crocodile.
Crocodile researchers have to wade through a lot of “biggest fish” stories when they endeavor to determine record sizes of the various crocodile species. There are many zoos and parks who claim they have the biggest, and it's up to the researchers to check these claims out and determine who is correct.
