Vegetable Soup Diet

All About the Vegetable Soup Diet

There are many variations of the vegetable soup diet. With some of them you eat normally, substituting vegetable soup for snacks or any between meal eating. This makes for healthier snacks, eliminating many of the sugars, carbohydrates, and empty calories you would find in a chocolate bar, chips, cookies, crackers and the like.

The most intense vegetable soup diet is simply a variation of the seven-day diet that has been circling around for years. It is not the healthiest diet and is meant for short-term, immediate weight loss. It usually works, not because of the kinds of foods you have eaten, but because the overall calories in the diet are only in the 800-900 calories per day range. Anyone who lowers their calorie intake to this level will lose weight for sure, no matter what they eat.

The vegetable soup diet and the cabbage diet are much the same. You are supposed to use the diet for no more than a week, then go off it and do it again several weeks later. If you don’t like cabbage or vegetable soup, you are going to have a hard time with these vegetable diets. Generally, weight loss is around ten pounds for one week in the diet. You have to eat at home as there is no restaurant food allowed on the vegetable soup diet.

A sample vegetable soup diet might look like this:

1st day--you can eat all of the vegetable soup you want plus all the fruit you want, with one exception--no bananas. You are allowed to drink black coffee, tea with no sweetener, cranberry juice or water.

On the 2nd day you can have all the vegetable soup you want, and all of the low-calorie vegetables you want, plus a baked potato with butter. Vegetables do not include corn, beans or peas.

The 3rd day you can eat vegetable soup and any mixture of fruit and vegetables from days one and two.

The 4th day is a little different. You still get to eat all the vegetable soup you want, plus you must eat eight bananas (fewer is OK, more is not) and drink two glasses of skim milk.

By the 5th day you are probably getting a little tired of vegetable soup, but it is still on the menu, along with twenty ounces of beef, chicken or fish, 6-8 glasses of water and anywhere from 1-6 fresh tomatoes.

If you like beef, the 6th day is a real treat. You can have your vegetable soup, of course, but also three beef steaks and any amount of vegetables you want to eat.

The 7th day is the last day of the vegetable soup diet. You can have vegetable soup, two cups of brown rice, unsweetened fruit juices and any amount of vegetables you desire.

As previously mentioned you can substitute cabbage soup for the vegetable soup and have the same results with this diet. Cabbage soup usually has cabbage, carrots, onions and tomatoes. This diet is not meant for long-term use. It is completely out of sync with what experts consider to be a healthy diet. Someone tried it, lost weight, and it got circulated around and around.

You have the possibility of losing 10 pounds or 10-15 pounds on this seven-day diet. The loss is mostly fluid and will not stay off when you begin eating a regular diet again. No one should drop below 1200 calories a day as is recommended with the diet.

You should discuss any change in diet with a health professional. This is even more important if you take any kind of medications. Many can make you sick if not taken with the appropriate amount of food.

Some people love the vegetable soup diet and some people hate it. It is only for people who want short-term weight loss. If you want to keep the weight off, talk to a dietician about setting up a nutritious diet plan and combine it with exercise.
