There are a great many advantages to eating beans, protein being a very important one indeed. Beans protein is held second only to a few meat sources, and those who do not partake in the eating of meat will find that beans are their number one source for this energy giving nutrient. At the very top of the heap are soy beans, which offer a whopping 29 grams of protein per ½ cup serving without the pods that they are grown in. A soy beans protein is second to none, along with quite a few other important elements which the body needs for sustenance. As many other types of beans have, soy beans, or edamame beans as the youngsters of this variety are called, carry great amounts of calcium, iron, magnesium, phosphorus, zinc, and amino acids. Soy beans are the most likely choice for most dishes and substitutes which need to be lactose free, such as dairy milk and cheese. Tofu is a great source of the soy beans protein and other nutrients, and adds an interesting texture to many meal preparations.

The beans protein as it pertains to the overall substance within the bean is substantial, and the carbohydrates found them is pretty hefty as well. Beans of all types have these specialized proteins, and the carbohydrates that they provide are broken down instantly by the body into simplified starch. The sugars that this process creates are used for energy even before any reserves of fats are called into action, making the bean a somewhat questionable choice for those intending to shed weight quickly. As a whole, however, the bean and its legume relatives are an almost perfect food source, offering the body everything it needs to survive aside from water.

A beans protein varies depending on the type of bean in question. A kidney bean, for example, has far less protein content than does a lima bean. Beans also contain a complex sugar which causes flatulence, but this can be minimized by the long soaking process, and also by discarding the water that is used to cook them.
