Shrimp Kabobs

How to Make Easy Shrimp Kabobs

Shrimp kabobs are a popular and delicious way to enjoy a shrimp dinner. There are a wide variety of shrimp kabob recipes out there, some are made with shrimp only, some combine the shrimp with tasty vegetables, some alternate the shrimp with beef for a surf and turf.

The best thing about shrimp kabobs is that they are easy, fast and a great way for a beginner to prepare a delicious and impressive meal with shrimp. The only supplies needed are the shrimp, any veggies or meat that will be added and skewers. The only other important factor when making shrimp kabobs is how to cook them. The two most common ways are grilling and broiling. Either way, it does not take long and the final result is fantastic.

The first step is to buy and prepare the shrimp. Many grocery stores sell the shrimp already shelled and de-veined, which means all the chef has to do is bring the shrimp home and cook it. Shrimp that is purchased with the shell on is not difficult to prepare. To remove the shell, grasp the tail of the shrimp and peel the shell right off. Next make a small cut in the back of the shrimp with a sharp knife. A dark colored vein will appear down the length of the shrimp’s body. Take the tip of the knife and remove the vein. Rinse it under a little cold water and the shrimp is ready to go.

What the kabob is made of depends on what the diners want to eat. Some people put a bunch of shrimp on a skewer, grill or broil it up and eat it all by itself. A nice marinade some barbecue sauce and simple spices can really make this a delicious dish.

Most often, the shrimp is combined with a few different veggies – onions, peppers, zucchini, potatoes, tomatoes – any type of vegetable that is good on the grill works just fine. Simply cut the veggies into chunks that will fit nicely onto the skewer. Size the vegetables so they will cook in the same amount of time as the shrimp, which is not long at all. A medium size shrimp will cook up on the grill in only 5 or 10 minutes, which is generally more than enough time for most chunked veggies to cook through.

Prepare the chunked veggies and shrimp first, adding any marinades or spices. Then place them on the skewer, alternating between the shrimp and different veggies. Once the skewers are ready, put them on the grill or in the broiler. Depending on the size of the shrimp, they will only need to cook for maybe 10 minutes, and they should be turned once to get both sides. When the shrimp turns pink, that means they are done.

Remove the kabobs from the grill or broiler as soon as they are cooked and enjoy them while they are still hot for the best taste!
