Potassium Facts

Some Important Potassium Facts

The following potassium facts have been compiled, to provide you with information about an element, which is essential for human life. You will not find potassium in its natural form, as it is a highly volatile metal, which oxidizes quickly, and reacts violently when placed in contact with water. Still, potassium is one of earth's most abundant elements, ranking 7th. It exists in compounds it has formed with other elements. When obtained in its pure form, through electrolysis, potassium is the second lightest of all metals, lithium being the lightest, and is lighter than water. Potassium cannot be stored in air or water, and in its pure form is normally stored in mineral water.

Among the potassium facts of greatest importance to us, is that the element is found in every cell in our body. It is present as a mineral salt, or electrolyte, which plays a very important role in the proper functioning of the heart and kidneys, and in maintaining a proper fluid balance in our tissues. Potassium is also key to the proper functioning of our muscles, which of course includes the heart. Two other electrolytes found in our cells are sodium and chloride.

The required level of potassium in our body is maintained by consumption of approximately 4,000 mg per day. When normal levels are maintained, the likelihood of an individual suffering from a degenerative disease, such as adult diabetes and stroke, is significantly lessened. A lack of sufficient potassium in the system often manifests itself though symptoms of fatigue and muscular disorders. Fortunately, potassium deficiency is rather uncommon, as our diet normally contains an adequate supply.

Some other potassium facts highlight the regulation of the amount of potassium in our system.  A high potassium diet may be prescribed for people suffering from heart failure, or have neurological problems. Potassium supplements can be taken, but should be taken only when prescribed by a physician. An excess of potassium in the system can be quite dangerous and, in some cases, fatal. In some instances however, potassium supplements, in the form of pills, are prescribed for people experiencing problems due to low levels of potassium. These supplements are quickly absorbed into the blood stream, and the symptoms usually begin to diminish quite rapidly. It is worth repeating, that you should not take these supplements on your own. Those foods containing a higher amount of potassium per serving have been well documented, as have those having lower amounts of potassium. Low potassium diets are sometimes prescribed for people having kidney problems, which can lead to an excess of potassium in the bloodstream.

The presence of electrolytes, as well as trace minerals, in our body is essential, as is having a proper balance of these elements. Fortunately for most of us, we can go about our everyday lives, not having to worry too much about things getting out of whack. The key to maintaining proper levels is almost always found in good eating habits, and living a healthy lifestyle.
