What Are Carbohydrates

A Quick Guide to What Are Carbohydrates

Much to the relief and satisfaction of the medical community, the low-carb fad diets are beginning to subside as the public takes notice and president over their own health issues. Being told by the smallest 5% of the population that we will look that way if only we do this and don’t do that is not only false, but it’s patronizing. We have been misinformed, and many of us learned the hard way, before the fads were challenged and put to rest. It’s time to understand what carbohydrates are, why they are so important to your health, and what types are the ones that you want incorporate in your daily dieting habits.

The most beneficial attributes of carbohydrates are their ability to be easily and quickly converted into energy and to kick start the metabolism. The digestion of good carbohydrates helps with the processing and absorption of protein. Without carbs, protein can begin to build up within the liver and kidneys, causing a vast array of difficulties and dangers. How many carbohydrates we consume is not nearly as important as the source of the carbohydrates is, and the difference between the good and the bad will be made quite clear shortly. It is important to remember that good, naturally occurring carbohydrates are essential to the proper absorption, destabilization, and digestion of vitamins, minerals, fats, and nutrients. The bad ones, on the other hand, can completely defeat our energy and interfere with the healthy digestion and excretion of these important elements.

How many carbohydrates are good for you? If they are the bad kind, then very few of them should be considered acceptable on a daily basis. Bad carbs include those found in manufactured and processed foods such as potato chips, white bleached pastas, processed cane sugar, desserts, and of course white bread varieties. The heavier the bread, the more cumbersome it becomes to the digestive processes, which is why we can feel lethargic after eating these types of foods. This is not to say that you should deprive yourself of these foods, because, after all, who doesn’t love bread and spaghetti? But, you will need to be careful, and be the mediator between the eyes in your stomach and the bottom line.

How many carbohydrates should I consume if they are naturally occurring? Well, the good carb list is quite a bit shorter than the bad carb list is, but these beneficial supplements can help you to maintain proper levels of carbohydrate digestion. Fresh fruits and berries, fresh green and leafy vegetables, legumes, nuts, and beans are all quite good for you.
