Worms In Humans

Some Quick Facts About Worms In Humans

Although there are thousands of different parasites found in the human body, there are relatively few infestations of worms in humans. A worm infestation is rarely serious to a human and almost never fatal unless there are other underlying conditions.

The most well known worms in humans are hookworms, pinworms and roundworms, with the roundworm being diagnosed most frequently. It is thought that 1 in 4 people will contract roundworms during their lifetime. Since the symptoms are similar to many other illnesses, a doctor ordinarily must examine a stool sample to determine if a person is infected with worms.

Some worms in humans are visible to the naked eye, especially roundworms, which occur most frequently in school-aged children. These worms look like tiny, white pieces of thread and can be found in feces as well as around the anal area. The most common symptom of this type of worm is itching in the anus.

All types of worms that infect people have symptoms that can resemble other illnesses. The long list of common symptoms of worms include:

anemia
anxiety
bloody stools
cough
digestive problems, including diarrhea, gas and constipation
eye pain
fatigue
fever
general weakness
insomnia
loss of appetite
mental dullness
protein deficiency
stomach ache or nausea
unexplained rash
vomiting

Long lasting symptoms can be an indicator of worms, and if any of these symptoms lasts for longer than a day or two a doctor visit is definitely in order. All of these are common to other sicknesses as well, so a diagnosis of worms is rarely the first choice.

The most common cause of worms in people is drinking water. Never drink unclean water, especially when out of town or in an unfamiliar location. Worms can also be ingested, most commonly in raw meat, so use caution when preparing foods and when cleaning up after food preparation.

A doctor can prescribe antibiotics for any type of parasite infection. Many people use colonic or colon cleansing products to eliminate worms. There are also a number of herbal remedies that can be found at health food stores to cleanse the body of worms or other parasites.

Certain foods and drinks are helpful when trying to eliminate parasites, especially foods that have high fiber content. Other items include: apple cider vinegar, cranberry juice, figs, garlic, pomegranates and pumpkin seeds. Another way to prevent worms is to cook meats thoroughly. Many nutritionists suggest using only organic fruits and vegetables, and taking great care in washing all produce before it is eaten. Drinking bottled or distilled water is also helpful to avoid parasites.

Overall cleanliness plays a role in avoiding worms and other parasites. Washing hands is the number one way to combat illness and infection, especially after using the bathroom. Keep the kitchen clean, and use special caution when dealing with raw meat. Also take care to clean up after pets and be sure to wash up after playing with them or cleaning them.
