Worms In Dogs
How to Prevent Worms in Dogs
Anyone with a dog will be happy to learn how to prevent worms in dogs. There are a few types of worms that can make dogs sick, including hookworms, roundworms, tapeworms and whipworms. The most common symptoms a dog with parasitic worms will suffer from are diarrhea, vomiting and weight loss since the worms are feeding off of what the dog eats.
There are several things that can be done to prevent worms in dogs. The first step is to have the dog tested. Puppies can be tested for parasitic worms as early as 3 weeks old. It is not uncommon for a puppy to have a worm infestation, so it is important to have a new puppy checked out as soon as possible.
All dogs should be taken to the veterinarian for annual exams. This is a great way to prevent worms in dogs, because the vet will not only test for worms. They can also provide products that will help the dog fight off worms and other pests like fleas, ticks and heartworm.
During the visit to the vet, it is important to get good protection for dogs from fleas and ticks. These particular parasites are known carriers of tapeworms and they can transmit them to your dogs if eaten. Not to mention that fleas and ticks are annoying pests all on their own.
Dogs who spend a great deal of time outside are at a higher risk for contracting worms from stray animals they come across or even wildlife they encounter. Many dog owners love to take their dogs to run around in the dog park for a special treat, but if the park is not clean and well maintained there is a chance the dog can contract an illness like worms just by playing in an area where an infected dog has been. Parasites can also be exchanged between dogs playing together, so it is a good idea to get to know your dog’s friends.
Dogs should never consume feces – their own or that of other animals. Consumption of feces is the most common way dogs contract worms and other parasites that have the potential to make the dog extremely sick. The same holds true for eating dead birds or other animals found along the road or in the yard or woods. Never let your dog consume a dead animal carcass.
All dog owners should regularly check the dog for worms. This can easily be done by inspecting the dog’s feces for tapeworms on a regular basis. Tapeworms in feces look like tiny pieces of white rice. It is also helpful to examine the dog’s anus for tapeworms. Should tapeworms be found on the dog’s body or in the feces, contact the vet as soon as possible for treatment.
