Stress Relief Techniques

Exploring Effective Stress Relief Techniques

Yoga is just one of many ancient stress relief techniques that has grown in popularity over the past few years because it is so effective at alleviating stress. Other highly effective stress relief techniques include writing and various mind and body therapies. Perhaps the best of all stress relief techniques, however, is simply learning how to recognize stress and having a plan to deal with it when it becomes a problem.

There are many ways to relieve stress, and some of the most common are not very healthy. Many people respond to high stress levels by drinking, smoking, eating poorly or even taking drugs. While those things probably will change the way you are feeling, they are not good responses to stress. In fact, in the long run each one of those actions usually leads to even more stress.

Regular exercise, eating a balanced diet and getting enough rest are the basics of a healthy lifestyle, and they are also a great way to relieve stress. Incorporating these three basics into your life is an excellent strategy for learning how to cope with stress. There are a few other things that work as well.

Many overstressed people turn to writing as a stress reliever. Keeping a “stress journal” works on many aspects of stress. It is an outlet for negative feelings as well as a record of happenings and reactions that can be a terrific aid when trying to identify the root of your stress. Sometimes a person suffering from stress has no idea of the actual cause of the problem. Writing things out freely and without judgment or reservation brings issues out in the open that may be buried deep within the mind. Writing acts as a release.

Along those same lines, another great way to wipe out stress is by expressing yourself honestly to others (and to yourself for that matter). Many people go through the motions of life without being true to themselves or their feelings. This type of personality trait can lead to overwhelming problems with stress, which in turn can cause sickness and other troubles. If you’re feeling stressed or overwhelmed in a circumstance, talk it out with a friend or family member. If you don’t feel comfortable talking with someone you know, find a therapist. It doesn’t matter so much who you talk to. It’s the talking that attacks the stress.

Stress can also be overcome by learning to relax, both in body and mind. Simple tools of relaxation, like deep breathing will lead to immediate reduction in stress. Test it out. If you feel anxious or stressed in any situation just take a minute, stop everything and breathe deeply. Only a few deep breaths will almost immediately calm your body down and provide instant relief. Practice relaxation on a regular basis and you may not have to deal with stress problems ever again!
