Migraine Facts that You Need To Know

Arm yourself with migraine facts. You may be suffering from migraines and not even know it.

•           Roughly sixteen to seventeen percent of people globally get a migraine headache at some point in their lives. That's over a billion people. Many times if not diagnosed and not classical “migraine”, they may shrug them off as sinus headaches.

•           Most people think of migraines as horrible headaches with auras and sensitivity to light and sound. This is not always the case. Migraines facts show that a migraine sufferer can have as few as two headaches a month, or as many as two to six per week.

•           Technically, if you have more than two headaches a month, you suffer from Migraine Disorder. Also associated with the disorder can be vertigo and nausea, circulatory problems and behavior changes.

•           When you discover what triggers your migraine, facts suggest that you can try to stay away from those types of situations, like loud or bright places. Migraine triggers are often generalized, as with the light and sound, but you may be affected by a totally different trigger.

•           Migraines can be treated with medications and sometimes respond to relaxation therapy as well. The first medication type is called Abortive, and these are the drugs that you take after you feel the migraine symptoms begin. The second type is Preventative, and these medications are taken daily to keep you from having a migraine headache at all.

•           It also helps to know what some of the triggers are for migraine, so you may be able to tell when an episode is starting. Triggers include certain types of food (like alcohol, aged cheese or chocolate), hormonal changes in women, changes in your normal sleep schedule, weather and fumes or smells.

•           How can you prevent migraine? Facts conclude that there are ways to prevent migraine, and not all of them are medicinal. If you get proper exercise and eat a well-balanced diet, this may help you to keep from having migraines. In addition, practicing good posture, and avoiding lots of repetitive motions, as well as avoiding smoking and drinking alcohol are beneficial in avoiding migraine.

•           In preventing migraine, facts have also shown that chiropractic and massage treatments can also help people who suffer from migraines. Herbs and supplements can be effective as well, especially the herb feverfew, which has had good results with many migraine sufferers.

•           Other ways to prevent or treat migraine without using prescription or OTC medications include aromatherapy, exercise and heat and cold. In aromatherapy, you may place a soft cloth with lavender oil and warm water on your head or neck, like a compress. Exercise is good for prevention or even interruption of migraine, but don't over-do it. Work your way into any exercise routine slowly, because rapid changes may themselves bring on a migraine. Try a hot pack or a cold pack to relieve migraine symptoms, and help relieve the pain more quickly.

•           Migraine can be a debilitating disorder, but using these many ways to help you, you can move beyond your migraines, and live more of a normal life.
