Lice Prevention

A Few Valuble Tips On Lice Prevention

Lice prevention is far preferable to getting rid of lice. If you treat your child's hair with a preventative medication, you won't need to worry about medications or shampoos that kill lice. Head lice are not jumpers. They usually get from head to head by hitching a ride on a hairbrush or a hat.

Your program of lice prevention starts with teaching your children to avoid sharing things that have been on other peoples' heads. This would include bike or riding helmets, towels, scarves, hats, combs and hairbrushes.

Be sure that your children only hang up hat and coat on a separate hook from everyone else's coats. Don't let them throw coats and hats into a pile with other children's' outer wear. In addition, you will need to clean anything that your child has direct contact with, like pillows, car seats and headphones, if other kids' heads touch them too.

In play and activities at school, young children come into a lot of contact with others, head to head. The American Academy of Pediatrics states that total lice prevention is probably not possible. So, you should check your kids on a regular basis, for lice or nits. In this way, you can catch an infestation early enough to get rid of them more quickly.

There are methods to prevent your child from catching lice in the first place. One of them is to use coconut oil shampoo and conditioner. This is supposed to make your hair unattractive to lice. And it is a pleasant scent to wear, too.

Olive oil shampoo and conditioner is also said to be a good way to prevent head lice. Some salons carry this type of shampoo and conditioner, and it will also leave your child's hair soft and shiny.

Tea tree oil is widely recognized as a great lice prevention additive. You can find tea tree oil at health food stores, and online. You can add tea tree oil to your regular shampoo routine, or you can mix it with water in a spray bottle, and apply it that way. You can also spray pillowcases with tea tree oil and water as a further preventative.

If your child has just had head lice, there are means of lice prevention to avoid another outbreak. First, call your child's school. Don't share any personal items that may be worn on the neck or head. Check all family members for nits or lice. Check your child's hair and scalp for ten days after you deem her to be lice and nit-free. If you catch any more, treat with LiceMD or the natural methods described above. Wash all clothing and bedding in hot water. Dry them on high heat. Disinfect all hair products by soaking in very hot soapy water for ten minutes. This includes brushes, combs and barrettes, etc. Place stuffed toys in bags and seal them for two weeks. Vacuum car seats, mattresses, carpets and rugs, and dispose of the bags after you're done. This should help prevent another bout with lice.
