What Is Anxiety

What is anxiety, and how will I know if it gets the better of me? We all feel it, and it is a completely normal function for a healthy human psyche. Without a certain degree of anxiety, or fear, we would not sense danger or obey the thought of consequence, as we would have no natural compass or control to tell us what is unsafe. Understanding what the lack of fear can do to our overall health and preservation, it is easier to see how the overbearing presence of it can also endanger our normal way of life. Things that we would normally comprehend, and even welcome, become situations which are nearly unthinkable.

What is anxiety? Or perhaps more pertinent, what does heightened anxiety mean to those who are suffering with it each and every day? Anxiety disorders can take on a very back seat roll in the beginning, as you may be confronted with a slight feeling of worry where once there was none. These unforeseeable instances tend to occur during otherwise typical events, such as driving, socialization, and work related events, and should not be taken lightly. This is not to say that you should panic at all, as many who are blessed with early diagnosis and treatment are able to limit their symptoms quickly. But ignoring these slight occurrences is certainly not recommended either, as they may become more frequent and overwhelming with time.

Also a disease which can be cunning in both its onset and its symptoms, this disorder is a highly difficult one to place in the "what is". Anxiety has many faces, and takes on many rolls, and as such needs to be diagnosed by a professional in either the medical or psychiatric field. The telltale signs are not always so blatant as devastating chest pains or palpitations and shortness of breath. They can be as slight as a nagging question in the back of your mind, or either an increase or decrease of sleep over time.

If you have noticed that you just don’t feel as confident in public situations, or that you have little control over the rapidity of your thoughts, you may wish to speak with somebody that you trust about what is going on with you. These small, seemingly insignificant occurrences may be nothing, but it could never hurt to air your concerns and vent your feelings. And if they turn out to be something, you stand a much better chance of stopping these symptoms from taking over your already hectic life.
