How To Eat A Pomegranate

When you see how much someone enjoys eating this fruit, you will want to learn how to eat a pomegranate yourself. The rich, sweet juice is just part of the overall taste that will leave you wanting more. The pomegranate may be one of the oldest fruits that humans have been fortunate enough to grow and consume.

The pomegranate has many seeds, so you'll need to get past them to get to the juice, which is wonderful when used in drinks, creative dishes and sauces. The seeds are delicious to eat, and they can make a wonderful garnish for those occasions when you want to impress the folks you're entertaining.

A pomegranate is roughly the same size as an orange, but its color can be anything from a purplish-red to an orange-yellow. If you don't get the seeds out in the right way, you can make a mess while you're trying to figure out how to eat a pomegranate properly.

To enjoy your pomegranate without spilling seeds and juice everywhere, here's what you'll need:

Paper towels, a colander, a bowl, a cutting board, a slotted spoon, a knife and some water. And a pomegranate.

The first step in preparing a pomegranate for eating is to cut the crown off the top and dispose of it. After you slice the top off, use a knife to make scores on the rind of the fruit in a few places, but don't cut through the fruit.

The next step is soaking and separating your pomegranate. Fill your bowl with cold water. Put the pomegranate upside-down into the bowl, and leave it to soak for five or ten minutes. After it's done soaking, leave the fruit in the bowl, and gently break the rind apart where you scored it, and separate the rind from the seeds. Then let the seeds sink to the bottom of the water bowl.

Then you need to get at the seeds, and you'll discover how to eat a pomegranate without making a mess. Use the slotted spoon to remove the rind and the membranes, and discard them. Use your colander to pour the water and the seeds through, to drain. Use the paper towels to dry the seeds. Seeds will be even more flavorful if you store them in your refrigerator for a couple days.

Once pomegranates have been picked, they no longer will produce sugar. Most fruits will, but not this one – it will not ripen more once it's picked. You can keep a pomegranate in a cool, dry area and it will last for about a month. If you store it in the refrigerator, it can last for two months. You can freeze a pomegranate for up to a year in an airtight bag, and it will keep its flavor.
