Rose Facts

Flowers speak volumes in our society; there are rose facts and trivia that bear this out by the use of flowers in our everyday lives.  Flowers such as roses, which are an overwhelming favorite of the majority of people, are used to express emotion, to increase feelings of self-worth and to increase happiness.

There is proof through rose facts that throughout history these flowers have been used in other ways besides to express emotions.  Back in the days of the Crusades, rose plants were taken west where they were planted by monks in the monasteries to be used in medicinal purposes.  Rose water, made from rose hips, was used as a cure for a variety of disorders such as constipation, drunkenness and insomnia.  Rose oil performed well when applied to the skin as a toner and perfume.  Moving up in history to the 19th century, rose facts also show that the blooms were added to other ingredients to make jelly.

Over time, the giving of roses has taken on deeper meanings than the simple giving of a gift.  A gift of roses conveys an emotion to the recipient as well, and the color of the rose exemplifies the emotion.  Sentiments of love, passion and congratulations are expressed in the giving of red roses; a single red rose sends the message “I love you” from the giver to the recipient.  Brides often choose white roses for inclusion in their bouquets and for the boutonnière sported by the groom and groomsmen, giving the white rose the connotation as being the “bridal” rose.  Pink roses are signs of appreciation and gratitude for a service or sentiment.  The popular yellow rose suggests joy, friendship and gladness.  Often, people who feel they are unable to verbally convey these emotions hope that by sending the appropriate colored rose to someone, the message will come across unspoken.

People going through a difficult time in life, perhaps even experiencing temporary bouts of depression are encouraged to purchase, for themselves, flowers such as a rose; facts indicate that the mere presence and scents of these blooms are able to pick up the spirits of the despondent.  A study done at Rutgers University prove that flowers such as roses have an immediate impact on happiness and exert a long-lasting positive effect on moods.  This study also showed that the simple display of flowers in a room bring positive emotional feelings to everyone who enters the room.

These rose facts show that flowers such as roses speak volumes in everyday life.  Whether conveying a message of love or gratitude, picking up the spirits of a friend or even yourself, roses can serve to be a positive emotional impact on anyone’s life for any reason.
