Teacup Chihuahuas

Teacup Chihuahuas: The Slighter Version…
Teacup Chihuahuas are just exceptionally small versions of their parent breed, and there is usually one teacup Chihuahua in each litter, sometimes two. You guessed, the teacup variety is the runt of the litter, and as such is susceptible to many health factors that need to be addressed as quickly as possible. These tiny guys were squeezed out in the womb, getting the least of the room and the nutrition. This accounts for their small size and often sluggish growth, not to mention the feebleness of their first few months of life. If you have happened across a breeder who specializes in the breeding of teacup Chihuahuas as a novelty, you might do best to steer clear of that particular individual.
It is ok to purchase or acquire a teacup who occurred naturally and who has been carefully checked and raised, but be very aware of those who would breed small and potentially sickly teacup Chihuahuas as common practice. There have been reported cases of intentional malnourishment and neglect of mother Chihuahuas in order to produce stunted and underdeveloped pups. For obvious reasons, this type of behavior should not be condoned or monetarily supported, but rather reported to the proper authorities right away. The needless suffering of innocent animals for monetary gain is an awful business tactic, but it has unfortunately proven successful.
The teacup Chihuahua is classified as one who gains less than 3 pounds at full maturity, and who stands at least 3 inches shorter than the acceptable breed standard specimen. He is far more likely to have both circulatory and digestive health issues, and his life span may be shortened, closing the normal 15 year life span of the dog down to less than 10. They may also have trouble controlling their urinary tract, as the bladder is often too small to support very much pressure. Be sure that you are prepared financially and mentally prepared to deal with the medical and emotional needs of this tiny dog, for negative physical reinforcement is not an option.
Teacup Chihuahuas, because they are not a separate breed, can come in all of the typical Chihuahua colors, and they can be of long or short haired variety. It is not recommended that these tiny dogs be bred, though there are some litters who can all be considered as the teacup size, and who have no reproductive difficulties at all. The breeding of Chihuahuas is always a risky business, but you will not want to compound the dangers for your itty bitty one. If you come across teacup Chihuahuas of the merle coloration it is important to note that the gene responsible for this color strain can cause even more health issues for the little guys.
