Miniature Bulldogs

Important Facts about Miniature Bulldogs

While there is an organization called the Miniature Bulldog Club of America, this breed is not a recognized breed of dog to the American Kennel Club.  Although this is an important fact, equally important is the fact that the minis registered with the MBC are held to the highest standards and regulations to protect the dogs and their owners.

Because diminutive breeds of any dog are popular choices by many due to the adorable nature of their size, there are a lot of so called breeders cropping up throughout the internet.  This is true for miniature bulldogs as well.  Many people attempt to capitalize on the high interest concentrated on these dogs, and rush to meet demand through improper breeding.  The MBC is the only organization that currently registers these dogs, and the breeders within the membership adhere to the strict standards set by the organization.

One such standard is that miniature bulldogs registered with the MBC are not cross bred with other types of dogs such as pugs or terriers.  While these dogs are very cute and personable, they are not true miniature breeds.  The standard requires that all dogs registered with the organization must be 100% English bulldogs that have simply been bred down in size.  This ensures that the dogs bred are high in quality and health.

Miniature bulldogs are known for their gentle nature with their family, even children.  They are naturally loveable and friendly, and may not make the best of guard dogs even though they are fiercely loyal to their humans.  These bulldogs become so attached to their humans that they may not want to venture out into their yard without a companion.

Features that miniature bulldogs are famous for are their loud snoring when asleep, slight drooling habits after drinking (due to heavy lips) and they do not do particularly well in hot weather.  The snoring may be due to the short muzzle of the breed.  Bulldogs do not drool more than any other dog except after drinking, which is likely a cause of the heavy lips that is customary for the dog.  Also, again because of their flat noses on the short muzzle, breathing can be difficult for the miniature bulldogs when the weather is too warm; their short, smooth coats also are not equipped to keep them cool.

This breed is excellent on so many levels; ideal for small apartments and homes, for families with children, and for older adults looking for a loving, loyal companion.  When choosing a miniature bulldog to join your family, be sure that it is a true hybrid dog; as opposed to one of many cross bred varieties that are crowding markets to meet demand.  A healthy and well bred dog is the best choice of miniature bulldog.
