Learn About The Different Types of Parrots
If you're interested in birds, it's a good idea to learn a bit about the different types of parrots, before you select one to share your home.
Almost all parrots are colored brightly, with just a few exceptions. Some parrots are small and others are bigger and more vocal. Most of the more common types of parrots are green, and they can make wonderful pets. Some of them have truly amazing abilities to mimic humans.
Some types of parrots have multiple colors. They may be white, green, yellow, bright blue or mixtures of these colors. Sometimes parrots are called winged rainbows. A number of species of parrots are more wild, while some are willing to be handled, and more docile. These make wonderful pets, although the wilder subspecies are too feral to be kept by humans. A few of the tamer species are just as dependent on people as our children are. They love company – including ours – and they enjoy mimicking human voices.
Most types of parrots eat seeds, chicken, vegetables and fruits. They may become moody if they are not healthy, or if they become stressed out. This can manifest itself as plucking their feathers, or just as a general moodiness.
Parrots are popular birds, and they are intelligent animals who need socialization. They won't be good pets unless they are patterned and trained to be good pets. Good training is very important to help the parrot bond with you. Your parrot should be fed natural foods of various sizes, textures, colors and shapes.
You need to understand your parrot's needs, both psychological and physical. Different types of parrots have varying needs. Cater to these needs as best you can, so that you will have a happy and healthy parrot in your family.
The smallest parrot is the Pygmy Parrot from New Guinea. The largest is the Hyacinth Macaw, which originated in South America. Some of the other popular types of parrots include Amazons, Parakeets, Lovebirds, Macaws, Cockatiels, Cockatoos, Lorikeets and Lories. Here are a few more parrot species:
Senegal parrots can imitate creaking and phones ringing, as well as talking. They need daily exercise and time to interact with you.
Eclectus parrots are the rivals to the Amazon and the African Gray in their vocabulary and the clarity of their speech.
Amazon parrots are playful, energetic and social animals that need lots of interaction with their owners.
Quaker parrots need a lot of stimulus and attention to help them avoid aggression and boredom. When you respond to them, you invite them to mimic human speech.
Green parrots may be one of the most favorite types of parrots. They are easy to train, and inquisitive, affectionate and intelligent.
Select a parrot that you can spend time with, and learn to enjoy their colorful plumage and their mimicry of humans.
