What Do Mice Eat

What do mice eat in the house? Unfortunately, if you have mice in your home, there is a good chance that a hidden food source is keeping them satisfied. Many field and deer mice will head toward the warm, dry crevices of housing structures, where they can also detect that food is present, in order to escape the wiles of winter and heavy rainfall. Once inside and comfortable, these little critters will go after just about anything that will stand still. Dried organic products and prepackaged grain products are a big draw for the mouse, and these foods include crackers, oatmeal, cereals, flour, dried beans, and any other hapless product he can chew through.

What do mice eat if there are no easy pickings lying around? Well, depending on the species who has graced you with their presence, this could mean just about anything. Some species are carnivorous, such as the grasshopper mouse, and will munch on many types of insects, or even on fellow rodents in desperate situations. Many types of mice will eat meat, especially if pregnancy and lactation are factors when these foods are available. These foods can include chicken, beef, some types of fish, lamb, other small dead mammals, and their very own species out of instinct and survival.

What do mice eat in the wild? This also depends greatly upon where they live and what species of mouse is in question. Field mice are foragers and will keep busy almost constantly, hunting and hauling and storing precious tidbits of food within dens beneath the ground. If they are lucky enough to live near a crop field or farming facility, the mouse will make good use of laying grains and loose piled foods. Any tiny crevice will be sufficient means for his opportunistic ways, and here is where the trouble often begins. Mouse droppings, when left in holding tanks, are often ground into finished food products which are shipped and fed to the public. Mice also enjoy a great variety of vegetables, so your garden is a not great place to have them visit either.

What do mice eat when nothing else is readily available? The answers to this may surprise you. Under threat of starvation and malnourishment, mice will eat anything from wood to the soles of shoes. Wallpaper is ingestible for them as well, and the carcasses of insect and bees will also suffice. Of course mice will eat cheese, but the cliché imagery of his love affair with this dairy product is not a true portrayal of his eating habits. He will basically take what he can get and ask no questions, it just so happens that cheese used to be left out on tables and counters before the invent of refrigerators, and he was drawn to it because it was there for the taking.
